Sailboat Gear Reduction Plate. Comes standard with a 2:1 gear reduction pulley set mounted on a 1" drive shaft. Steel plate is 1/4" thick, ready to be painted, and has multiple mounting holes for ease of alignment. Side supports can be chopped down for proper sizing. Top mounting holes can be used for triangulated support and alignment. Motor is not included. Now comes with shaft coupler!
A gear reduction is not always necessary, and largely depends on the size, efficiency, prop style, and desired speed of your vessel. However, due to the high RPM of the Mars Brushless motor, we recommend using a gear reduction system rather than direct-drive. This will improve efficiency, provide proper torque and cooling, and prevent cavitation. Typical reduction is around 2:1, but will depend on the required prop RPM needed to reach hull speed. Proper reduction will enable the motor to spin your prop at the hull speed RPM of your prop when the motor is spinning at its max RPM. This number can be estimated using the 50 rpm/volt constant (48 volts * 50 rpm/volt ~ 2400 rpm max). The Gen-4 controller has a regen feature which can allow for current to be put back into the batteries from the spinning prop while sailing. This is dependent on your sailing speed and prop design, and doesn't work in all situations.
