Jackal Manual User's Guide

Read This Manual FIRST, Before Attempting to Ride !!

Silent electric power offers access to some trails and regions where other gas-powered cycles are prohibited due to noise constraints. The Jackal's high-powered electric system offers incredible low-end torque, head-whipping acceleration and exhilarating top speed. Clean electric power lets you plug in anywhere you can find a 110Vac (or 220Vac where required) standard wall outlet. Programmable controller lets you dial in custom settings for your personal preference and riding ability.

The Jackal arrives mostly assembled and ride tested. This testing assures functionality and performance. Ride testing and low volume handcrafting may incur occasional blemishes and scratches that do not inhibit the Jackal's performance. These blemishes may be accepted as unique aspects of low-volume, hand-made and tested products.

Assembly

Assembly is mostly self-evident, requiring only a set of Allen keys (4, 5, 6mm). If the customer does not feel comfortable with assembly, any competent bicycle shop will be able to assemble the Jackal. Please make this instruction manual (and the warnings therein) available to assembly personnel.

Bolt the handlebars to the stem. Securely fasten bolts with handlebars centered and rotated to a comfortable pitch. Adjust brake levers as needed for convenient reach.

The front wheel uses a large hollow axle inserted through the fork. DO NOT FORCE axle into place!! This will damage the axle and hub. It is imperative that this axle be inserted gently. It may require some "wiggle work" to align the floating channel inside the front hub to pass the axle. A drift or other cylindrical object may be inserted from the other side to manipulate the hub channel. Once inserted through hub and both fork legs, tighten axle retainer (5mm key), then the four fork bolts (4mm key).

Directions for Use

The Jackal Electric Cycle is intended solely for off-road use by experienced adult riders wearing approved safety equipment. Do not ride with more than 1 person on the Jackal. It is the rider's responsibility to know local requirements and regulations regarding vehicle use. See 'Release of Liability' section for more information.

WARNING: This is a high-powered machine. When it is switched on, there are no lights and it makes NO SOUND. There is the risk that someone may inadvertently or unknowingly turn the throttle causing runaway and potential injury or damage. DO NOT switch the vehicle on unless you are ready, straddling the vehicle with no one standing in front of you. Advise bystanders not to touch the throttle, or stand in front of the vehicle.

!!! Switch the vehicle off before leaving it, handing it to another, or picking it up from a fall. Educate any potential riders of these precautions.

When testing the vehicle, always raise the rear wheel off the ground with a stable platform (milk crate, e.g.) centered under batteries/motor.

Examine the vehicle prior to riding. Check tire inflation, chain tension (with weight on bike), brake adjustment, platform attachment, brake function, throttle spring return, grip clearance for uninhibited throttle motion, etc. Handlebar and brake lever position should be comfortable and secure for the rider.

The Ride

Use two hands to install Quick-Disconnect (QD) key firmly into matching gray receptacle. You will hear an electrical pop; this is normal. The QD serves as main power and an emergency disconnect, to quickly break power from the batteries. {The rider may attach a lanyard to the QD loop to break battery power in the event of a fall.} The QD key must be removed any time the vehicle is not is use. Remove QD to pick the Jackal up from a fall, to transport, to push, hand off, charge, demonstrate, or to store. Leaving the QD key in will drain the batteries, as well as increase the risk of runaway accident.

With the QD key installed, the vehicle has full power potential and the throttle is live. Throttle response is instant - it increases linearly with throttle rotation - 90deg is wide-open throttle. Do NOT REV the throttle as you would for a gas cycle. Throttle cautiously until you are accustomed to the response. Advise new riders of these precautions.

*Note: throttle response (as well as other parameters of performance) are programmable with 'straight through' RS-232/DB-9 serial port connection to PC. Uses free software available from www.Alltraxinc.com. This software runs on Win NT/XP. **DO NOT Charge vehicle while programming controller!! This will destroy controller, computer and create shock hazard for operator. Controller is preset to 50% output power, 30% throttle response. (throttle response above 50% in not recommended)

Brakes are motorcycle style, with front brakes on the right hand side, rear brakes on left hand side. Do not engage the brakes and throttle at the same time. Brakes can be adjusted by turning cable carrier at brake lever. Turn out for tighter response.
Ride cautiously until you gain familiarity with the throttle response, power/speed/handling/braking of the vehicle. When you notice a loss of power or top end speed, it is time to charge. DO NOT excessively drain batteries. This may destroy them.

Charging

Range/Ride time will increase 30-50% during first 20 cycles. For life of batteries, keep first 10-15 cycles short and recharge promptly. ALWAYS recharge immediately - discharging too low or leaving batteries discharged will destroy them.

To charge, plug charger into 110Vac (or 220Vac with Soneil charger) outlet and into small red/black connectors on battery pack. Charge will take anywhere from 3-6 hours depending on state of charge. This is a smart charger and will not 'overcharge' your pack. It is safe to leave overnight, but it is recommended to leave on less than 24 hours.

Do not mount the charger to the vehicle. Charger should be carried in a padded bag or case where it is isolated from shock, vibration, and particularly moisture. It is wise to carry extension cord and adapters for remote charging when convenient.

Maintenance

The Jackal requires essentially the same care and maintenance as would a high performance mountain bike. Small adjustments to brake cable tension as cables stretch and pads wear, tires/tubes as needed, etc. Tension spokes as needed. Periodically tighten bolts throughout the vehicle.

Modest maintenance is required for appropriate chain tension and lubrication. Chain will stretch with use. Some slack allowance (1/2"-3/4" loaded) is recommended for suspension travel. Chain tension can be increased by sliding motor forward in mount. Securely tighten motor mounting bolts. Original chain tension is factory preset.

Do not flush motor/electronics with water. If necessary, wipe down with wet cloth and allow to dry before powering up. Normal operation in moist conditions should not cause a problem. Do not leave vehicle in the rain. Do not expose charger to moisture.

Warranty

The Jackal is warranted for life against defects in frame structure and craftsmanship. The components and electronics (excluding consumables) are warranted to work under normal conditions for 90 days from date of shipment. Consumables includes batteries, brake pads, and tires. Failures due to improper use, crashes, accidents, customer modifications, or component changes are not covered. Repair/replacement of damaged components must be taken on a case-by-case basis.

Release of Liability

Operating any motor vehicle is potentially a dangerous activity. Off-road motorcycles require special considerations for the safety of the rider and bystanders. It is the sole responsibility of the owner/operator (hereafter, rider) of this vehicle to:

Ø Wear appropriate protective clothing (helmet, goggles, gloves, etc).

Ø Know the surroundings: be familiar with the trails, know where the vehicle is allowed to be, be aware of others on the trails.

Ø Know local laws, restrictions, requirements: follow park rules and guidelines, be knowledgeable of age/licensing requirements for minors.

Ø Know your personal skill level. Do not attempt dangerous or illegal stunts with this vehicle. Ride within your abilities.

Ø Know the vehicle: Keep it in properly tuned and in running condition including brakes, transmission, securely fastened hardware, tires (tread/inflation), battery charge, electrical connections.

The manufacturers and retail sellers of this vehicle may not be held liable or responsible for any accident or injury incurred by the rider. TS Motors cannot be held responsible for damages to person, property, or vehicle as a result of its operation.
